Right, so you are a "Web Developer." What do you do?

The term "Web Developer" covers a lot of ground. Web application coding, graphic design, information architecture, search engine optimization—all these jobs and more are considered web design. I´m available for hire for any or all of these tasks. What does that mean? No matter where you are in terms of your relationship with the internet--if you have no website and you need to know what to do and where to start, if you have a site and want it to work better and more efficiently, even if you have a strong web presence and just need some simple maintenance or changes on your site, I can help you.

I´m new. Where do I start? What should I expect?

When you are starting from scratch to bring your business onto the internet yourself, the process can be rather intimidating. It doesn´t have to be. I´ll start by meeting with you to talk about the needs of your business or project. Meeting at the physical place of business is greatly preferred as it gives me a chance to get a feel for the personality and needs of the business--often I´ll take a few pictures. Next, I´ll design a solution or a series of possible solutions for your business. We will meet again to discuss which solution fits best, the estimated costs of each solution, and maintenance schedule after completion. After the best option is agreed upon, the development and testing phase will begin. Once the site has been thoroughly tested, I´ll make it available online. At that point your site will be up and running and ready to go. Depending on the nature and scope of your project, you might want set up a regular schedule of maintenance with me. How much will it cost?

Pricing is calculated using a number of factors: scope of features, number of pages required, difficulty of the project, duration and nature of the work, as well as the time frame of the project. Prices will be estimated at the beginning of a project. Scripting and Programming

I create valid, standards compliant XHTML and CSS. I have limited but strong knowledge and experience with PHP, mySQL, javascript and other technologies.

Design

As a designer I´m particularly handy with Photoshop and other Adobe tools. I can create art for a site from scratch or adapt physical media for web work. In some situations I can even build a site layout as it will look, then break the .psd down into a semantically correct, non-table based html file and images in a short amount of time.

Organization and Information Architecture

I feel that some of my most valuable and unique skills fall into this category: in organizing or reorganizing data in efficient, sensible ways; in envisioning how users will interact with content; and in finding and using the strengths of an employer´s real world business to suit his or her online needs.
